School Council

Purpose of the School Council

School Council's are mandated under the Education Act.  Like other school councils, the Oakville Trafalgar School Council advises the principal and, where appropriate, the school board on issues affecting the education programs and the operation of the school. The Council’s role, in collaboration with the principal, staff and community, is to provide input and advice with regard to school goals and to enhance learning opportunities, through various activities, for the benefit of all students in the school.

The membership reflects both the school and the community and includes parents and guardians of students, the principal, a teacher, a student representative (secondary school councils), a non-teaching school staff member as well as members from the community at large. Parents and guardians make up the majority of council members.

School Council Constitution

Joining School Council

The election of members for School Council is held at the Annual General Meeting each year in September.  We encourage parents of students presently enrolled at OTHS, and especially those who are new to the school, to attend the meeting and consider joining Council. We are a friendly group of people working towards the common goal of ensuring that OTHS provides the best educational opportunity for our children.

School Council Awards

School Council awards a number of awards to outstanding students at the Commencement Ceremony each year. In recent years there have been four awards for $500 each.

The recipients of these awards are chosen by the school awards committee. To receive the award a student must demonstrate support for various learning opportunities through artistic, technical or athletic endeavours. The candidates will not be candidates for other awards and must be performing at their best.

The criteria for these awards are purposely left broad to allow the award committee the flexibility to recognize deserving students that would not otherwise be recognized. Furthermore, limited criteria prevents the need to exclude any particular student(s).

Principal Profile

A Principal Profile is completed and reviewed on an annual basis in consultation with the School Council and Principal.  It allows the school community to reflect on the school’s goals, vision and/or mission as well as the leadership characteristics in a Principal believed to be required to achieve these goals.  This document is used by the Board when making principal transfers and placements.
